Lawson St. Clair Grazette

January 13, 1963 — March 2, 2024

Lawson St. Clair Grazette, affectionately known as Law, was born on January 13, 1963, to Granville Proverbs and Beatrice Grazette Young in Long Bay St. Phillips, Barbados. On Saturday, March 2, 2024, Lawson, who had recently marked his 61st birthday, peacefully passed away.

Lawson graduated from Princess Margaret trained in the skill of furniture making. Lawson was employed with the John Hampden Furniture Co. building some of the finest furniture in Barbados until he started his own joinery business. He briefly worked at Home Depot in Columbia, but soon left to pursue his own business as a carpenter.

Lawson left his mark and legacy with his gift of carpentry. His hands and mind possessed a remarkable talent. It was truly his passion as he left a lasting impact on many people from mentoring students in crafting kites and bird houses to building room additions and meticulously laying wood and tile floors. Lawson never said no when a church needed his talents. He felt it was his honor to serve.

Lawson enjoyed watching western movies and TV shows as well as listening to reggae music, particularly the music of Bob Marley. He took great pleasure in preparing meals for others with a particular fondness for rice and peas. Lawson led a modest nonmaterialistic lifestyle but loved his 1998 Black Chevrolet Silverado 1500 truck with the intention of keeping it forever.

Lawson, a resilient and strong man triumphed over colon cancer in 2005. By the grace of God, he remained cancer-free. He had a deep empathy for those suffering with cancer, offering his love, comfort, and encouragement to all.

Lawson was a loving father to Ashani, whom he cherished deeply. Sadly, he will not have the opportunity to embrace the role of a grandfather to her first child soon to arrive.

Lawson is survived by his mother, Beatrice Young, his daughter, Ashani, and his stepdaughter, Josay. He was the tenth sibling among nineteen brothers and sisters: Fay Mack, Jaqueline McConney, Cora Beckles, Corrie Young, Dawn Young, Jessy Proverbs, Tom Proverbs, Kelly Skeete, Annette Proverbs, John Proverbs, Arlene Kinch, Helen Proverbs, June Proverbs, Tyrone Proverbs, Rosie Proverbs, Zelda Clarke, Ronald Shepherd, Cuthbert Shepherd, and George Shepherd. Additionally, he was fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, especially Sherill Seery and Sandra Richards who live in South Carolina and North Carolina as well as a wide circle of friends whom he cherished as his extended family.

We have all been deeply touched by the life of Lawson and will greatly feel his absence.
