James B Tyler

James B. Tyler, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on Thursday, August 28th, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on Friday, January 27th, 1950, in Washington, D.C., James was a resident of Elgin, South Carolina, where he spent his later years.

James spent his formative years in New York City, where he attended and graduated from public school. His passion for creativity and design led him to the New York Fashion Institute in 1979. He dedicated many years of his life to the New York City Transit Authority, working as a train operator until his retirement in 2007.

In 2009, James relocated to South Carolina, where he embraced the slower pace of life and the warmth of Southern hospitality. He was an avid fan of jazz music and found joy in capturing life's moments through photography. James was also a passionate traveler, with a particular fondness for cruises, which allowed him to explore new places and cultures.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon Mitchell Tyler, who was his partner in life and love. He leaves behind his sons, Saeed Tyler and Najee Tyler, and his stepchildren, Latisha Coles and Jonathan Woodley, who will forever cherish his memory. James was a proud grandfather to six beautiful grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his sisters, Chandra Branch and Stephanie Tyler; his beloved aunt, Louise Young; his sister-in-law, Shelia Marie Mitchell-Durant; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Bernard Tyler and Pauline McElveen Branch; brothers, Robert McElveen and Billy McElveen.

Funeral services for Mr. Tyler will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to Collins Funeral Home, who are honored to assist the family during this difficult time.
