James Andre Hines

May 15, 1961 — March 13, 2024

JAMES ANDRE’ HINES, affectionately known as “Hines”, “6’9”, “Big Hines”, “Dunkin Hines”, was born to Lela B. ”Tot” Hayward and James Hines on May 15, 1961 in Manhattan, New York. He was the oldest and was the epitome of a quite humble son and brother. His siblings, son, grandchildren, nieces and nephews absolutely loved him.
Andre’ accepted Christ on February 13, 2024.
Andre’ battled with mental illness for thirty years of his life. He fought an amazing fight. He never gave up and finished his course.
Andre’ attended Kershaw County Public Schools, graduating from Camden High School in 1980. After high school, he attended Furman University on a full basketball scholarship and later transferred to Elon College and then Maryland University. He was slated to play for New York Knicks but due him becoming ill with mental illness he never got the opportunity to fulfill that dream.
Andre’ was preceded in death by his mother, Lela B. Hayward, his maternal grandparents Melton and Eliza Eley; step-father, Jerry Hayward; Paternal grandparents John C. and Beulah Hines, Sr.; Nephew, Caleb Elijah Hayward; and Niece Jasmine Nicole Eley.
Andre’ touched so many lives and was treasured by his family, and many, many friends. He will be missed forever. Left to cherish Andre’ are his beloved sister and caregiver Charlene M. Hayward; son Jovas Travon Pate; grandchildren, Tra’jon, Travonna, Treasure, and Taylor Pate all of Camden, SC; father, Mr. James Hines of Manhattan, NY; step-mother, Phyllis Hines of Manhattan, NY; siblings, Eddie (Narvelia) Eley, Valerie H.(Joseph) Davis, Gloria E. Hayward, all of Camden, SC; Tamisha Hines of Myrtle Beach, SC; Derrick Hines of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida; Aaron and Denzel Hines of Manhattan, NY; one adopted brother John (Patricia) Marshall, of Camden, SC; one God son Carlos Curry, of Stanford, Florida; one God sister Ann Stover, of Camden, SC; one God brother Everett (Shaye) Johnson of Cassatt, SC; one grand aunt Rozena Kirkland of Camden, SC; a special niece that he adored Calandra E. Hayward, nieces, Matilda (Jeffery) Taylor, Shambra, Chakeia & Sharmell Davis, Whitley Eley, Antionette Simon, Ashanti Edmondson, Ariana Hines; nephews Aaron, Jr, Asir, and Ares Hines; three grand nieces Arianah & Tyliah Davis, and Spirit Taylor; four grandnephew Kendall Gillary, Jr. Ty’Mir, Zy’lan, and Kai’riean Ferguson; a special cousins Mary Curry and Geraldine Adamson; family friend Debbie Pate-Knox; special friends Rev. Annie and Lester Powell; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other family and friends.
