Deacon James Atkins was the son of the late Dalton Atkins and Laura Lee Atkins. He was born on March 30, 1942, and entered into eternal rest on April 26, 2026, at MUSC Health Kershaw Hospital. James was married to the late Kizzie Atkins. He was educated in the Kershaw County public schools.

James was a devoted member of White Oak Missionary Baptist Church in Camden, South Carolina where he served as a deacon, and was formerly a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where he was ordained under Rev. Eddie Moore. His favorite hobbies were watching TV, attending church, spending time with family and friends, and he loved the Waffle House. James was employed at Duke Power for over 40 years.

James is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; daughter, Carolyn Belton; and three sisters, Della Overton, Geneva Thomas, and Janie Atkins.

He leaves to cherish his memories his daughters, Domanique Atkins, Rosalyn Smith-Stover, and Merian Smith; one son, Roosevelt Lee; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; four brothers, Johnny (Rose) Atkins of Plainfield, New Jersey, Dalton (Marlene) Atkins, Jr of Irmo, South Carolina, Willie (Kathy) Atkins of Greenville, North Carolina, and Lawrence Atkins of Camden, South Carolina; two sisters, Louise Atkins of Piscataway, New Jersey, and Dorothy Atkins of Camden, South Carolina; two uncles, William Atkins of Jacksonville, Florida, and Robert Atkins of Camden, South Carolina; two aunts, Eva Fredricks of Piscataway, New Jersey, and Margaret Mouzon of Concord, North Carolina; one brother-in-law, Freddie Thomas; and a host of nieces and nephews.
