Samuel Conroy Washington

Samuel C. Washington was affectionately known as "Gut", "Big Sam" and "Kangaroo Judge" was born on August 8, 1944 to the late Lucille Hartwell Washington and Samuel Joseph Washington. Big Sam went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 2,2017 in Lugoff South Carolina. Big Sam was educated in the public school district of Denmark, SC and graduated from Voorhees High School and Junior College. He also was a graduate of the Area Trade School now known as Denmark Technical College. Big Sam demonstrated his athletic talents playing center on the basketball team and quarterback on the football team. He was also a member of the Royal Blue Club. Big Sam organized and coached a girls softball team for many years. At an early age, Samuel joined Rome Baptist Church. He was dedicated to serving in any aspect that was needed. After moving to Camden, SC, he became an active member of St Paul United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. He was known as our "Santa Claus" for the children at Christmas time for the church. As a young boy, Samuel joined his father's business known as Washington Painting and Decorating Company. "Beautification" was his motto. Sam Senior was a very detailed business man and he taught his sons and grandsons the same values. They later changed the business name to Washington and Washington Painting and Decorating Company. Big Sam was a member of the Cottageville-Denmark Hunting Club. Big Sam was very dedicated to his club and the members. He loved to hunt and taught his son, nephews and grandsons to enjoy his passion during the hunting season. Every Saturday and most holidays they hunted for deer, turkeys or rabbits.  For many years Big Sam supported Voorhees College, Denmark Alumni Chapter during Homecoming. He, along with others, would fry fish and Big Dave would make his famous "Red Rice". They would serve fried fish and red rice; in which, everyone would look for their stand at these tailgating affairs.  He leaves to mourn his loving and devoted wife Rita, two daughters, Tiffany J. Washington of Raleigh, NC, Dywanna N. Washington of Columbia, SC; one son, Samuel D. (Marlo D) Washington of Charlotte, NC. One grandson Samuel D. Washington II and one granddaughter Summer Washington, both of Charlotte, NC. Also his three stepdaughters; Tracey (Sam) Beverly of Madisonville, TN; Andrea Robinson of Columbia, SC; Sharita (Duvall) Braxton of Atlanta, Ga. Two stepsons Terrence (Tawanna) Robinson of Birmingham, AL; Sammie Derek (Venetia) US Navy/Norfolk, VA. Also five step grandsons; Mikal Robinson of Columbia, SC; Xavier and Julian Braxton of Atlanta, GA, Sammie Isaiah of Norfolk, VA and Step Beverly of Chicago, IL. Five step granddaughters; Stacey and Sammie Beverly of Madisonville, TN, Madison Braxton of Atlanta, GA; Bianna Robinson of Birmingham, AL and Nyia Robinson of Norforlk, VA. He is also survived by five sisters Christine Tyler of Blythewood, SC, Mary (Eugene) Patrick of Blackville, SC, Evelyn Washington of Chino Hills, CA, Brenda Washington of Chino Hills, CA, Joyce (John) Greggs of Denmark, SC and one brother Antonio Washington of Jerusalem Valley, CA. One nephew raised as a brother Algernon (Vanessa) Tyler of Lithonia, GA. He also leaves four sister in-laws; Rachel Johnson, Sue Jones & Lucille Allen all of Camden, SC and Mary Ella Ashley of Roselle, NJ and two brother in-laws Johnnie Jones of Charlotte, NC and Arthur Robinson, Jr. of Camden, SC; one aunt Mary Washington of Columbia, SC and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and the mother of his children, Mrs. Ernestine Washington of Denmark, SC and his man's best friend, Chase Washington. He enjoyed life to the fullest and shared his love freely with people of all walks of life.
