John L. Goodwin

January 15, 1919 — December 18, 2016

John L. Goodwin, the son of the late Johnnie and Daisy Scott Goodwin, was born January 15, 1919 in Kershaw County. He entered into eternal rest on December 18, 2016 at Kershaw Health.    John was educated in the public schools of Kershaw County. He was reared in a Christian home and joined the St. John Baptist Church at an early age. John served in the United States Army during World War II. After his tour of duty, he moved to Philadelphia, PA, and later enrolled in technical school and studied auto body repair. He owned and operated "John's Auto Body Shop," specializing in Auto Body Technology. His customers loved and respected him, which helped him to build a thriving business. While living in Philadelphia, he met the love of his life, Bernice Watson of Shreveport LA. They were soon married and spent many wonderful years together. Though they had no children, a niece, Deborah, became like a daughter, and their relationship remained strong over the years. Her children, Kim and Bridgett, know him as "Grandpa." John joined the White Rock Baptist Church in Philadelphia and served faithfully in serval ministries of the church. He was also involved in many community and social organizations. He made a difference in the lives of many people in his community, volunteering himself to those who were in need of assistance. John loved his family and became a mentor to the younger generations giving advice and teaching life skills. He was preceded in death by his wife and six brothers. Those left to cherish his memories are four sisters: Maggie Hector, Camden, SC; Cecelia Richardson, Florence, SC; Frances (Paul) Weldon, Columbia, SC; Daisy James, Camden, SC; one brother, Melvin (Beatrice) Goodwin, Philadelphia, PA; a godson, Theron A. James; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Caregivers: Meranda Coe and Isa Woods: two special friends whom he depended on daily, Charlie McCray and Albert Lee Alexander.
