Amos Adamson

Deacon Amos Adamson was born on May 9, 1933, the eldest child of the late Ophelia Mae Adamson. He received his education at the Hickman Elementary School and the Kershaw County Vocational School, currently known as ATEC, where he obtained his high school diploma, the GED. As a young man, Deacon Adamson joined the United States Navy, serving aboard ship on the Mediterranean Sea. For his years of service, he received an Honorary Discharge. After relocating to his home in Cassatt, South Carolina, he courted and married the late Lillie Mae Dubose Adamson. Their surviving daughters, Deloris Jeanette Adamson Jones and Ophelia Jennifer Adamson currently reside in Camden, South Carolina. In 1948, Deacon Adamson confessed and received the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized, becoming a member of the Hyco Missionary Baptist Church. As a profession of his belief, Deacon Adamson demonstrated great love for the church through constant and faithful service. He was an avid attendee of Sunday School, Bible Study, Prayer Services and all meetings relating to the various ministries to which he belonged; the Willing Workers, the Senior and Gospel Choirs, the Ushers, the Trustees and the Deacons. He also worked as the church sexton for many years. The Hyco Missionary Baptist Church is affiliated with the Mt. Moriah Baptist Association and Deacon Adamson also worked within some of those ministries; especially the Ushers and Brotherhood. He held the position of sexton for the Association’s Fellowship Education Worship (FEW) Center. Other organizations Deacon Adamson had affiliations/ memberships with were, the Kershaw County Branch of N.A.A.C.P., where he held the office of Chaplin; the American Legion Sanders Stoney Post 203 and the Kershaw County Black Caucus. Deacon Adamson enjoyed worshiping with the churches of his and surrounding communities. He would make himself available to serve in any way he could. He professed his love for the Lord by testifying of his goodness, giving his personal testimony and always talking about the Bible. To cherish his memory in addition to his daughters are six siblings, Mrs. Moise Fields (Edward- Deceased) of Irvington, NJ, Mrs. Susie Sawyer (James L.) of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, Mr. Sammie Tucker Sr. (Dorothy) of Camden, South Carolina, Dr. Gladys Jordan (Isaiah) of Newark, New Jersey, Ms. Elsie Adamson of Ellenwood, Georgia, Reverend Gracie L. Adamson of Cassatt, South Carolina; a sister in law, Mrs. Catherine James of Baltimore, Maryland, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Deacon Adamson had a special fondness for his caregiver, Mrs. Mary Still, his best and loyal friend (who sat by his bedside almost every Sunday), Mr. Earnest Drakeford, and his other caregivers, Ms. Marian Manigault, Mr. Willie B. Wilmore, and Mr. and Mrs. Alex (Jimmie) White. To all who knew Amos, he will be missed!
